MADDIE MEGA MILES MAY - Walk the walk - Support me in whatever way you can!

I’m taking on the Mega Miles Challenge in support of the Charity for Civil Servants.

**You follow my progress here!**
Needing to get fitter and healthier the challenge is a great way for me to start, while support charity that support those that might need it one day around me.
A hobbyist photographer I will journal the challenge with photos from my walks and short snippet of where/what got to.

More about where the your support and donations go:

The Charity for Civil Servants supports current, former and retired civil servants when they face tough times.  From mental health struggles and financial assistance to relationship issues, getting through grief, and coping with disability, they’re here to help people stay strong, whatever life brings.

They’ve been there for civil servants for over 137 years, providing an umbrella of support when it’s needed most and so I'm fundraising to make sure they can be there for future generations too.

My Updates

FINISH

Saturday 1st Jun
Completed it MEGA MILE MAY!

Ive really enjoyed walking more. I’ve changed nothing but walking more.
Lost 2kg in weight, got myself out and aim to carry on.

Being in an office based role really takes away what my soul loves and that is being outside and exploring.

It can be done.

Well done everyone who took part.

And thank you to everyone who donated and gave support!

Almost there 🥳

Friday 31st May
Seeing as its raining again. Retail walking is where I am finishing the challenge. The range / B&M / Tesco / KFC … WE GOT THIS 😅

Jog it (Day 30)

Friday 31st May
No time to walk bloody jog it!

All the way up & all the way down (Day 29)

Wednesday 29th May
Okay so my photo makes that hill look like a flat path, it isn’t I assure you. Essex has hills but not many inclines. June I am aiming to improve my incline stamina. Short back story to that: In recovery from COVID (now 3yrs ago) I found my breathing was more difficult during certain activities 😮‍💨 cycling I would get out of breath and struggle to push for energy, while a 5k run easy. My body was weak, I found inclines tiring, would more likely to give up and walk with no problem. As I have been walking more I understand that I need to challenge those more difficult activities that include include inclines to improve my lung health.

Elderflower fields (Day 24/25/26/27)

Wednesday 29th May
I used to work events to fund some travelling around Europe. And tbh never stopped, as soon as the season starts I am hunting for events that pay well and are interesting. This one is with a company I’ve worked on and off with for about 8yrs. The location is in Wealden, beautiful part of the Country. The festival is a small family one where most camp. Weather was great!

Walking shoes round 2 (Day 22)

Wednesday 29th May
A trip to try more shoes!
Visited go outdoors where there were ramblers trying on boots and shoes. Got some good advise and found a comfortable pair.

I am going Canada in July and need decent footwear for all sort of terrain.

Rain rain go away (Day 21)

Tuesday 21st May
The rain did not stop. But I did walk the carpark at the second job to pick up steps after accruing 3k working from the office.

Wildlife (Day 20)

Tuesday 21st May
My second job is at a school. Is a nice area with woods up the road. The school is basically surrounded by house so wildlife is not expected. I often see a squirrel running, seagull bin diving, local cat and foxes walking about. Not too often do you see the true extent of what happens when children leave and human motion is minimal. Taking a walk (without my phone regretfully) as the sunset, I turn the corner to see not 1 but 8 squirrels all playing and foraging. Followed up by ant trails, blue tits, pigeons, crows, seagulls and the fox … just missing the regular visitor the cat!

Retail steps (Day 19)

Tuesday 21st May
Had a parcel to pick up so walked to the box, wondered around near by shops and walked home. 5k tick! Few refunds to carry out, drove to next few shops wondered in each. Finishing of with pizza on East beach

Engine test of the Vulcan ✈️ (Day 18)

Tuesday 21st May
My Saturday working for home was followed by trio to Southend airport to join the enthusiasts watch the restore Vulcan engine test. These planes were designed for WW2 but never made it to war. Originally white for cloud flying, they were later paint greens and greys as they carried out ‘lower’ duties. The engine and overall design influenced Concord greatly. Well worth the wait to see it parade the run way, alongside hearing the power of its engine!

Long way to corner shop (Day 17)

Saturday 18th May
Worked from the office however not many steps were made. After trying on some new clothes I walked the long way around to the shop, to treat myself to a friday night cider!

Walking shoes or boots (Day 16)

Saturday 18th May
After work trip to the outdoor shops to try on walk shoes.
I don’t particularly want boots rather shoes but boots were more comfortable.

Worky work (Day 15)

Thursday 16th May
Another back to back day.
Work from followed by second job, where I walked the grounds and done some weight lifting carrying the netball hoops to the pitch.
Exciting I know 😅

Planning session (Day 14)

Thursday 16th May
A trip to the pub after work to start the planning for a trip to Canada in July.
Followed by a walk to up my step count.

57 miles

Tuesday 14th May
155 - 57 = 98
98 miles to go 😊

98 17 = 5.8 miles a day
Which is about 11,500 a day

Work then work (Day 13)

Tuesday 14th May
From the office to next job. No traffic got there nice and early! The sun made appearance for the evening!

Heybridge (Day 12)

Tuesday 14th May
Heybridge basin, town of Maldon this cute river side town makes you wish for quiet coastal living. You can follow the canal back to Chelmsford or shorter one along the water into Maldon. Heybridge is in my list of favourites.

Drive to Dunwich (Day 11)

Tuesday 14th May
Little adventure to the Suffolk coast, taking a pit stop at Stonham barns along the tourist route A1120

Northern lights UK (Day 10)

Saturday 11th May
I did read that there was strong geomagnetic storm that would affect satellites. Did not think we would see it, even our dark parts in Essex are still light populated. Did not expect it to be so strong and visible! I drove out to Maldon and could to see the curtain lines plus colours of the oxygen and nitrogen! Pretty cool experience we got. Admittedly this my friends photo.

Garden working (Day 9)

Friday 10th May
1 day of my working week to devoted to an Apprentice. I started off indoors but thought lets not waste the sunshine on offer here. Set myself up outside, it was lovely just the right temperature for it. Again at the second job, walked the grounds but wasn’t able to sit outside here :( Can’t have all I suppose

Bit late for sunset (Day 8)

Thursday 9th May
After work walk at Langdon hills with a friend. You can see the skyline of the capital here. Early winter it sets behind making the shard and other towers tinkle. Summer the wheat fields are tall & golden. Miller and carter is placed in the road that divides the park, would recommend a long walk followed by foooood! Anyway, todays walk we did some inclines here. I struggle breathing on incline work and is something to improve upon but essex is not overly hilly. The blue bells here are starting to die off, nice to see a floor of green instead of mud & leaves.

Back to work (Day 7)

Wednesday 8th May
The return after a busy bank holiday weekend.
I am back 2 back most of this week with a second job, which I tend to rack up the steps up at as there is plenty of opportunity to meet & greet visitors and walk around the grounds.

HOWEVER, train and G4S strikes + the suns appearance must have had everyone travelling by car. Roads were stand still.
I travel from the office in Basildon to Hockley, 20/30 minutes usually ... 3hrs the journey took. Spent more time on the road than working.

Country craft show (Day 6)

Monday 6th May
Country Craft show at Penshurst Place. Bank holiday Monday wash out. We enjoyed walking around and seeing the traders still giving it their last shot of selling on such a cruel rainy day. The marquees were full of talented traders.

Jujitsu comp (Day 5)

Sunday 5th May
Partner trains jujitsu, today was his first competition in a while. He done really well. Food was on the agenda after, plus a short walk for after to top my steps up ;)

The Ghyll (Day 4.2)

Saturday 4th May
Another stall holder from today suggested a local reserve for a short walk. Here you very quickly forget the surrounding brick houses, tarmac and what not, lost yourself very quickly to the sound of trickling water from the river, busy birds and bees while admiring the woodland blue bells. This got me about 5k of my steps.

Stall at Crowborough (Day 4)

Saturday 4th May
Arty farty person I am, since joining the civil service it has gave me some of my weekends back. Which has allowed me to start travelling around selling my handmade bits. Current project is customising hats 👒 but what I can do is endless!

Grey (Day 3)

Saturday 4th May
The week is over and the sun is yet to make an appearance today.
Working from home I have not adventured out far today.
I have stall tomorrow in Sussex.
Usually take myself on a walk we’ll see if I can catch up on my steps over the weekend.

Grey day (Day 2)

Thursday 2nd May
Through the night we had a storm and the day has not seemed to have recovered.

The storm did not keep me up but my runny nose and cough did. When will this go.
Felt quite low on energy today as a result. Napped after work, done ‘retail walking’ as rain was due.

3k for steps so far, keeping my watch on until I go to bed. Get those extra few steps on my count!

Estuary walk (Day 1)

Wednesday 1st May
Hidden to many this public footpath is part of Estuary path, much loved by mountain bikers. This stretch is Benfleet marina to two tree island at Leigh. It gives great views of Hadleigh castle and surrounding farmland, Canvey & Leigh in the distance. The marsh land lends itself to wildlife… we heard frogs, birds chicks, saw ducks, geese and not forgetting Hadleigh farms brown cows with calves!

Day 1 - Start day

Wednesday 1st May
Currently getting over a four week cold! Hoping some extra steps will get it gone.

Weather has suddenly gone 9 degrees to 16 degrees, there were plenty of runners and walkers out this morning.

After work will be taking a walk... Will update you later with location and photo :) <<< Means you have to follow me or maybe donate!
